Media Relations

I took media relations during the Fall 2023 semester. I learned more about media pitching, PESO analysis, and the ever-changing world of media. I enjoyed learning to find stories that are interesting while tailoring the messages specifically for my target public more in-depth than I've done previously.

Here you'll find the few assignments I've completed along with short descriptions of what the assignment entails.

Crisis Communication Plan

The Crisis Communication Plan included determine a course of action based on a made of crisis scenario for ODU. This included an environmental scan along with internal and external planning including sample messages. 

Influencer Assignment

The Influencer Assignment involved choosing a product/campaign from a brand and matching it with an influencer. For this assignment, I chose Coco and Eve's holiday gift sets and Emilie Kiser as my influencer. In my document, you'll see specific about the platforms, campaign ideas, and compensation along with my rationale for the partnership.

PESO Analysis

The PESO Analysis assignment involved choosing an event and then creating a plan based on the four types of media; paid, earned, shared, and owned, to promote the event and bring it great success. For my event, I chose Something in the Water 2024 because I was interested in the purpose it was created and how the story could be effectively told in the media. Additionally, Something in the Water is a well-known event and I wanted to challenged myself to think outside of the box based on what had already been done.

Media Pitch Plan

The Media Pitch Plan involved combining newsworthy elements of a story, PESO strategy, a list of media contacts and relevant information, and a sample media pitch based on a predetermined topic chosen by my professor. My topic was creating a plan centered around the initiatives the Norfolk International Airport (ORF) has undertaken to encourage flight in the midst of the pandemic. The story I created mentions the importance of the airport to local college students needing to travel and how the initiatives the airport has taken have positively benefitted students.

Media Plan Content Samples

One of the major projects in this course was a group media plan. In the following document you'll see my sample content made for ODU's SET Office. My group's goals were to build more awareness for the clubs on campus and show more of what the SET Office does.
